2nd Degree

DeKalb Lodge conferred a 2nd degree last Tuesday evening, with the help of brethren from all over the Northern Area. RWBs Roger Larson and Vernon Kness were on the slate, from Rock River Lodge #612 and Chadwick Lodge #867 respectively. RWB Orville Shoemaker and WB Henry Toms were there from Friendship Lodge #7 in Dixon, and WB Tom Lewis, also of Rock River #612, was kind enough to obligate Brother Hansen on the 2nd Degree. DeKalb Lodge #144's own officers performed exceptionally well for their first times in their new chairs - Brs Michael Doyle and David Galica were smart-looking Stewards, B Ferald Bryan wrangled the candidate neatly at JD, and B Noah Panlilio took complete charge of the West. WB Dean Clark performed all of the Marshal's duties proficiently, while B David Nay kept us all secure at Tyler. All in all, Brother Hansen received an excellent 2nd degree after a great examination at the altar by WB Matt Kapustianyk. Our thanks to the brethren who traveled out to help, and to those who learned the work to confer this degree. We are looking forward to Brother Hansen's 3rd in the near future!Notice to Appear

With the help of RWB Dean Quarnstrom and WB Jerry Boehle (Horicon #244) as installing officers, WB Edelbert Pacis Gazmen of Old Glory Lodge #141 in Westchester as Installing Secretary, Brother Noah Panlilio as Installing Chaplain, and RWB Spahn as Installing Marshal. Standard Club and Lodge Officer School

The Lodge Officers School held at Illinois Central Lodge #178 in Amboy last night was an impressive event! Grand Lodge Instructor RWB John Essig and RWB James Essig instructed the full-form opening, receiving of the DDGM, receiving a member of the lodge, receiving a visiting brother vouched for and not vouched for, had stewards assist the deacons, went from labor to refreshment, then back to labor and closed! All of that was accomplished in 1hr and 55minutes with no stress. The instructors and the AADGM were impressed with the knowledge shown by all the brethren exemplifying the work, and many of the sideliners expressed satisfaction at having learned something that they could take with them back to their lodges. DeKalb #144, though somewhat under-represented, was able to provide excellent demonstrations of the SD work and the WM, as exemplified by RWB Dean Quarnstrom. The traveling gavel was won by the brethren of Horicon Lodge #244, who brought 6 lodge members to the school and edged out the home team for the trophy. We will have to work hard to catch up for the trophy or for mileage. We hope to see you next month on April 20th at 7p.m. in Oregon!

Sycamore Academic Bowl Team Places in Regional Masonic Bowl!

The Sycamore Academic Bowl Team took fourth place out of twelve competing teams at Boylan Catholic High School last Saturday, Feb. 20th. Winning three out of five matches in a morning session that ran from 8:45am until well after noon, the five students perservered without substitutes against teams that had extra members in their rotations to allow team members an occasional break. Auburn HS won first place, Boylan HS second place, Harlem HS third place (all from Rockford or Machesney Park) and Sycamore HS fourth place. The Sycamore team includes some freshman, and played at times against varsity teams with much more experience, yet they always showed a cool, mature, steady focus, and comported themselves in a manner that would make anyone proud to be there to support them - which we were! Congratulations to the Black and Gold team!
